Why do I go? In the summer of 1996, Jeanne asked me to go to Haiti with her and Dr. Campbell. Dr. Campbell had spoken with Dr. Berger about her interest in going on a medical mission. Dr. Berger mentioned that Jeanne goes on them all the time. So Jeanne got me to go also. My first trip was in September 1996. It amazes me as an O.R. nurse how much we waste in supplies that can be used in a third world country. So I go without a second thought. The first trip there and back was sad and rewarding. It was hard to adjust coming back with surgeons complaining that it is hot in the room, the OR lights are not bright enough or the instruments not working well. I then proceed to tell them where I have been and they are quiet for a time. The whole process starts again when I get back. Collecting supplies and my coworkers helping out also. I have sales representatives that offer supplies for our trips. It makes me feel good and them feel good. Everyone helps out. Every year I go it is more and more rewarding and I look forward to the next year to go again. It is hard work when we arrive each year to our destination, but being there and helping is what you get back twofold when you see the happy faces of the people we help. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this team. -- Maureen Doyle, RN |
